The first year of school has a different name in every state

The Australian Curriculum calls it Foundation. Ponder uses your state’s name once it knows where you are, and “Foundation” until then.

Senior courses are set by each state (WACE, HSC, VCE, QCE, SACE, TCE, the ACT Senior Secondary Certificate and NTCET), so Ponder offers general maths revision for now, clearly labelled as not tied to a state’s course.

How every practice set works

Each set has a few short questions. Every question follows the same five problem-solving steps, and the three hints line up with the first three steps, so help builds from a nudge to a worked example of a similar problem. The answer is never the first thing a learner sees.

StepThe learner asksA grown-up can ask
UnderstandWhat is the question asking? What is the question asking you to find?
PlanHow could I work it out? What could you try first? Would a picture help?
TryHave a go. A guess is a good start.Have a go, and tell me what you’re thinking.
CheckDoes my answer make sense? How could you check that?
ReflectWhat helped me? What would I do next time? What helped you? What would you do next time?

After each answer, Ponder explains why it’s right, or what to look at again. At the end of a set it celebrates the strategies the learner used, such as draw a picture, break it into parts and look for a pattern.

Questions people ask

Is Ponder aligned to the Australian Curriculum?

Yes. Every built-in practice set is tagged with Australian Curriculum v9.0 content-description codes, such as AC9M4N02 for a Year 4 maths description, and the codes are checked against ACARA’s published list. Each year page lists the codes set by set.

Does Ponder follow the NSW or Victorian syllabus?

NSW and Victoria publish their own Foundation to Year 10 syllabuses, built from the same content. Ponder uses the Australian Curriculum codes as the common key, so the sets suit classrooms in every state, though the order of topics varies between schools.

Is Ponder a replacement for my child’s teacher?

No. Ponder is practice and guidance between lessons. Teachers set the learning; Ponder helps a learner find the next step with questions and hints, so they arrive at the next lesson having done the thinking themselves.

How many questions are in a set?

Most sets have 6 short questions, so a set fits into a homework session. Each question has three hints, and Ponder explains every answer.
